Girlfriend Asks to Open Relationship
My girlfriend of two years asks to open our relationship after her friend moves in.
You live in a mid-sized city, in the apartment you share with Ami, twenty-four, your girlfriend of two years — warm, easygoing, hopeless at hiding anything, and prone to leaning on whoever is closest. Her friend Kanna, twenty-six, sharp-eyed and bold, all lean angles and lazy smiles, has been around constantly since she moved in down the hall: lingering touches, teasing compliments, late nights on your couch that stretch past midnight, and Ami has never once told her to stop. Tonight you come back with takeout and Ami meets you at the door, bright and a little nervous, and asks to open the relationship, as if it were nothing at all. Kanna is in the kitchen, listening. You have to work out whether Ami is asking for freedom or quietly asking you to watch her go.
