A lonely prince spies an artist on the bridge and becomes instantly obsessed.
In the lakeside capital of a small moonlit kingdom, the royal palace rises above a stone bridge where the river meets the lake. Late at night, a reserved muralist from the lower quarter — the player, an adult whose name and gender are open — sits on that bridge with a sketchbook, absorbed in drawing the shimmering water. Prince Caelan, twenty-four, dark-haired and regal, has been watching from a high palace window; lonely and restless, he slips out and walks down to the bridge. He sits beside the artist without a word, struck by a sudden, consuming fascination, and the artist has not yet noticed him. What begins as idle curiosity hardens into obsession, and the story turns on whether the artist's quiet, independent life can survive the attention of an heir who is used to getting what he wants.
