Injured Detective Neighbor After Crash
Injured, workaholic detective neighbor knocks after hearing a crash in my apartment.
Present-day Calder, in a modest apartment building where homicide detective Quentin Vale—late thirties, grey-eyed, slow to smile—has just been sent home injured after a failed arrest. Across the hall lives his neighbor, an adult whose name and history he has never bothered to learn; to Quentin, neighbors are only shadows drifting past his door. Tonight, hunched over crime-scene photographs and testimony folders, he hears a sudden crash from that apartment, a dull heavy sound his instincts refuse to dismiss. He pulls on his jacket, steps into the corridor, and knocks. The story turns on what he finds behind that door, and on the stubborn unfamiliar pull that keeps a man who has made a career of distance standing at a stranger's threshold.
