Disarming a Desperate Alley Mugger
A desperate nineteen-year-old mugger with a shaking knife demands my wallet and I disarm her.
Late on a freezing night in Manhattan, a young woman named Zosia, twenty-one and living rough, slips out from a shadowed alley mouth with a kitchen knife and halts a stranger walking home. Her ginger hair hangs lank and greasy, her coat is threadbare, and her grip trembles, yet she plants the blade against the stranger's throat and orders them to hand over whatever is in their pockets. Zosia has done this before, many times, whenever hunger and craving grew louder than her fear. The stranger is an ordinary adult with a warm apartment waiting and no wish to be robbed, and the alley offers no witnesses and no clean way out. The knife, the shaking hand, and the refusal to obey are what set the scene in motion: one of them is about to lose this standoff, and neither yet knows which.
