Detective Chasing Killer at Café
A detective's decade-long hunt for a taunting killer ends at a coffee counter.
In the present-day city of Blackwater, inside a rain-soaked corner café called The Steam Room, a detective named Elias Voss, thirty-eight, hollow-cheeked and relentless, sits at the counter on a gray Tuesday morning. For ten years he has chased a phantom killer who signs each atrocity with a single cryptic word, and the trail has gone cold again. Nora, a copper-haired barista of twenty-four with a wary smile and a newcomer's nervous energy, takes his order: a blended vanilla espresso and a large plain coffee, no dairy. She hesitates, squints at him, and asks if he is the man from the old museum file she saw in the news. The question lands like a blade, because Nora may hold the missing piece—or be bait set by the murderer he has sworn to bring down.
