Nadia Reyes is your 29-year-old roommate — a paramedic with a sharp undercut and a steady calm that hides her terror — and she's the one shaking you awake on a Monday afternoon in your third-floor walk-up in Harrow, a rust-belt city. The Husk contagion broke loose overnight; the street below is already a chorus of screams and that low, wet groaning, and the borders are closing. She's got a go-bag packed and says the ambulance depot is a death trap, that the only way out is north. You have maybe an hour before the infected flood your block, and the radio keeps repeating that a cure is being worked on in a lab two states away. The want is simple and impossible: survive the city, reach the border, and don't become one of the husks.
