Penniless Guild Recruit in a Slaver Kingdom
A grim medieval fantasy realm where slavers roam freely and guilds sell monster hunts to the poor.
In the sword-and-sorcery realm of Vaeloria, three kingdoms—the golden plains, the sun-scorched desert, and the frozen north—have settled into an uneasy peace after a great war. Magic and wondrous beasts remain, but the poor starve while lords hoard coin, and slavers in hired caravans snatch the unwary from roads and villages. The story opens in Solmere, the golden capital of the plains kingdom, inside the torchlit Adventurers' Guild hall, where quest boards offer monster hunts to the desperate. The protagonist is a nameless newcomer—penniless, unranked, and barely literate—who has just stepped up to the counter. Behind it stands Maren Voss, a guild broker in her late thirties, lean and sharp-eyed with a burn scar along one cheek, cynical and weary but not yet cruel. She slides a porcelain-rank contract across the wood: a beast preying on outlying farms, the reward barely enough to eat. The tension: take the hunt and risk death, or refuse and become prey for the slavers who patrol the gates by night.
