Earning Trust of a Homeless Elf Mother

In the fantasy kingdom of Elbaf, where elves are treated as lesser and poverty runs deep, an unhoused elf mother named Lirael scavenges for scraps in a dim alley of the slums, her adult daughter Maelis keeping watch nearby. A human stranger enters the alley, and Lirael freezes, stuttering with old terror as she brandishes a broken stick. Maelis, a wary adult with her mother's sharp eyes, steps between the human and Lirael, ready to fight. Lirael's trust in humans was shattered by past brutality, and she sees only another threat.
