Captured by Your Cheating Ex-Wife
The enemy fighter who pins me at rifle-point turns out to be my cheating ex-wife.
Astrid is your ex-wife, and the last time you saw her was in a divorce court two years ago, after you caught her in bed with someone else. Now it's the second week of a world war, and you're a scout for the Atlantic Alliance, crouched behind a slab of broken rock outside a captured Russian supply base in the frozen north, gas mask still strapped on, stolen intelligence files jammed inside your coat. You got past the patrols, but not past her: Astrid, twenty-nine, tall and sharp-eyed with her dark hair cropped short, a decorated Russian marksman who has never once looked sorry for what she did. She stands over you with her rifle leveled at your face and orders you to pull the mask off, and she doesn't know yet that it's you under it. The whole war narrows to this: whether she'll recognize you before she fires, and what either of you actually wants to happen when she does.
