Best Voyage alternatives in 2026: seven AI RPGs, by what you want

Updated

Voyage is Latitude's AI RPG platform, from the team behind AI Dungeon: persistent worlds, levels and quests, a studio for building worlds, and co-op for up to eight players. If it is not quite what you want (fewer rules, more pictures, a different price, or the story-first AI Dungeon it grew out of), here are seven alternatives, each with what it is best for and what it does not do, checked on its own site on October 21, 2026. Disclosure: we make Slopverse, one of the seven. We placed it by fit, not first.

Prices are as each product's own pages or app listing showed them on October 21, 2026; follow the link for today's. Voyage is in the first row for reference. None described means we did not find it on the product's site, help pages, update notes or app-store listing, not that it is missing. The two speeds marked timed by us are our stopwatch on free guest play. Our own row's picture, sound and speed cells are measured on slopverse.ai.

What Voyage does well

Per its site, Voyage is "an AI-native RPG platform where persistent worlds remember your choices, relationships, and consequences across every adventure". It opened as an open beta on August 26, 2026, with levels, quests and combat, a Studio where anyone can build a world, a Dungeon Master seat for running a game for friends, and a visual novel mode with character art and text-to-speech. Its App Store listing says you can "Play with up to 8 players in co-op multiplayer".

It plays on the web and in apps for iPhone, iPad and Android. You start with a free balance, "You can also play public multiplayer and scenarios for free", and its paid plans give "Unlimited core play, in-game Studio, and optional premium Usage features".

How we put this together

We have no accounts on these products, so this is not a hands-on review: every fact about another product is from its own site, update notes or app-store listing, quoted where it matters. The order is our judgment of how many people leaving Voyage each one suits, closest first to what its players enjoy: a world that reacts, room for friends, and free play to start.

The seven picks

1. AI Dungeon: best for open-ended text adventures with community scenarios

Voyage's own FAQ draws the line: like Voyage, AI Dungeon lets you go anywhere and do anything, "but as more of a story you craft more than an RPG adventure you go on". Per its site it is "a free AI text adventure game where players create open-ended stories", with a large library of player-made scenarios; since its Alchemy update it narrates and makes pictures and short videos when you ask (what Alchemy changed).

Price: free to play, with paid plans from $14.99 a month (its pricing page); per Voyage's pricing page, every paid Voyage plan includes AI Dungeon at the same tier. Trade-off: by Voyage's own description it is a story tool more than an RPG, and pictures come when you ask.

2. Friends & Fables: best for D&D-style campaigns with rules, maps and friends

If the party and the dice are what you like in Voyage, Friends & Fables is built to "Create & Play AI RPGs" with real rules: an AI game master named Franz, "Tactical turn-based combat based on D&D 5e rules", maps, quests and worlds that you or other players build. Up to six people can play one campaign together.

Price: free for "Up to 25 turns per day", then from $19.95 a month, with text to speech on paid plans (its pricing page). Trade-off: it is a tabletop game first, so pure storytellers get more rules than they may want, and pictures are made on request.

3. FableAI: best for free text RPGs with thousands of ready adventures and co-op

FableAI describes itself as "an AI text RPG that remembers your choices across chapters, solo or co-op with friends", with over 5,000 ready-to-play adventures, or a world started from one sentence. It has iOS and Android apps, and its site says "You can also jump in right here in your browser".

Price: "Forever free", with plans from $8.90 a month that add "Unlimited high-quality scene images" and "30 minutes of cinematic voice narration a month" (its plans page). Trade-off: free play is metered, with a limited number of pictures a day.

4. Altworld: best for a living world that keeps state, with no sign-up to start

If you play Voyage for a world that remembers, Altworld is built around the same idea: per its site, "Altworld is a free AI game in your browser", a life simulator and story sandbox where the world keeps state, so people remember, factions move and rumors spread. It says "Your first 10 turns work as a guest with no account".

Price: free accounts get daily Candles, and a Kindling Pass at $3.99 a month lifts the limits (its site); on our stopwatch, a guest turn's text came back in about 8.5 seconds, all at once. Trade-off: a world map rather than scene pictures, and no voices described.

5. Wyndra: best for illustrated, voiced stories on a phone or in a browser

Wyndra's site: "Characters speak in their own voices, every scene is painted as you play". A narrator sets the scene, each character has a voice you can customise, dice roll when it matters, and "Key moments become full illustrations". You can tap a choice or type, in a browser or on iPhone, iPad and Android.

Price: free to start, with "Premium plans unlock more turns, voices and scenes each month", priced at checkout after sign-in (its pricing page; its App Store listing shows plans from $7.99 to $149.99). Trade-off: pictures are for key moments, and its help page says "No plan is unlimited".

6. Slopverse (ours): best for scenes you watch and hear, like a film

Ours. You play the lead and type what your character says and does; an AI writer plays everyone else, and every turn comes back as a scene you watch and hear, with nothing to ask for or switch on: pictures painted shot by shot, every character speaking aloud in a voice of their own, sound and music under it. Start from one of hundreds of premises or describe a world in a line.

In Slopverse, the story starts coming back about 1 second after you send a move, and the first voice about 4 seconds after it (median, measured October 2026). In Slopverse, a typical turn brings two to four new pictures, each with depth and clickable hotspots (median two, measured October 2026). Slopverse paints each world in any art style and keeps it for every picture in that world; worlds played on it include live-action film stills, anime, oil paint, 3D animation, comic-book pages, stop-motion clay and pixel art. Slopverse's 3,126 sounds, made for the game, are each timed to the words and placed in stereo in the room's own acoustics. Slopverse's score draws on 1,436 music tracks, 1,273 of them split into instruments that come and go with the scene. Slopverse plays 154 visual effects over its pictures, from rain to embers, in time with the words. In Slopverse, every character speaks aloud in a voice of their own, with lip sync and a narrator between them.

Price: 20 free scenes, about 20 minutes of film. No card. Plans from $10 a month. (pricing). Trade-offs, plainly: it is single-player (the group version is a 24/7 Twitch stream where chat votes on the moves); there are no levels, stats or dice and no world editor; it is not unlimited, because every turn is painted, voiced and scored on rented graphics cards; there is no app (it is built for a computer browser, and phones work); and it is for adults (18+). It is new, made by one developer, Jonathan Larson, with a crew of AI coding agents.

7. Hidden Door: best for free, unlimited play in ready-made worlds

Hidden Door's pricing page says "Enjoy unlimited play across the whole catalog, free": you play a character of your own inside its published story worlds and can talk privately with the characters you meet.

Price: free; Creator, for building and sharing your own worlds, is $9.99 a month (its pricing page). Trade-off: you play in its catalog's worlds unless you pay to build one; its FAQ says "All of our art is hand-drawn by a team of artists", and we found no voices described.

Which should you pick?

Story first, from the same company: AI Dungeon. Real rules, dice and a party: Friends & Fables. Free play and co-op with thousands of ready adventures: FableAI. A world that remembers, with no sign-up to start: Altworld. Pictures and a voice per character on a phone: Wyndra. Every move back as a scene you watch and hear: Slopverse. Free play in ready-made worlds: Hidden Door. If what you want is eight friends in one persistent world with a studio behind it, Voyage itself is still the closest fit.

Questions

Is Voyage the same as AI Dungeon?

No, though both are made by Latitude. Voyage's own FAQ says AI Dungeon lets you go anywhere and do anything like Voyage, "but as more of a story you craft more than an RPG adventure you go on". Voyage adds RPG systems, a studio for building worlds, and multiplayer for up to eight.

Is there a free alternative to Voyage?

Per their own pages on October 21, 2026: Hidden Door offers unlimited free play in its catalog, AI Dungeon and FableAI are free to play, Altworld gives 10 turns with no account and daily Candles after, and Friends & Fables gives up to 25 turns a day. Slopverse starts with free scenes, then is a paid plan.

Which Voyage alternative is good for playing with friends?

Friends & Fables lets up to six people share a campaign with D&D 5e-style rules, and FableAI has co-op play. Slopverse is single-player, with a 24/7 stream where Twitch chat votes on the moves.

Which one pictures and voices every turn?

Slopverse paints and voices every turn without being asked. Wyndra gives each character a voice and paints key moments; Voyage shows character and location art with text-to-speech.

Is Slopverse made by Latitude?

No. Slopverse is an independent game by Jonathan Larson. Voyage and AI Dungeon are made by Latitude; every name here is used only to describe the product.

Is Slopverse free?

20 free scenes, about 20 minutes of film. No card. After that there are monthly plans; see pricing.
