Looking for a Character.AI alternative for stories?

Character.AI's company has filed for bankruptcy, and many people who use it are looking at what else is out there. If what you loved was the stories, Slopverse may be worth a look. It is a different kind of thing, though: a story game, not a companion chat, and this page says plainly what that means. 10 free scenes, about 10 minutes of film. No card.

What happened to Character.AI

On October 12, 2026, Character Technologies, the company behind Character.AI, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in Delaware, Reuters and Bloomberg Law reported. According to those reports, Disney is the opening ("stalking horse") bidder, offering $20 million for a non-exclusive license to some of the company's intellectual property, subject to the court's approval, and the sale is expected to close in late November or early December. The company plans to keep the service running during the sale, and to wind it down if no buyer comes forward to continue it. For anything about your own account or chats, Character.AI's own announcements are the place to check.

What Slopverse is

Slopverse is a story game. You pick a world, or describe one in a line, and you play the lead: you type what your character says and does, and an AI writer plays everyone else and the world around you.

Each turn comes back as a scene. Pictures are painted shot by shot for what just happened, every character speaks in a voice of their own with a narrator between them, the narration is captioned on screen, and music follows the mood. It plays like a film you direct one line at a time.

How it differs from a character chat

On a character chat app you talk with one character, often for weeks, and that character is the point. Slopverse works the other way round. You are the main character of a story, and the people you meet (the knight wedged in your doorway, the Dark Lord with hurt feelings, the stranger at the bar) are part of that story, played by the writer. Scenes move on, places change, and the story goes where you take it.

So some things you may be used to are not here: there is no catalogue of bots to pick from and no one-on-one message thread with a single character. Some premises centre on one person, but they still play as scenes, with a narrator, other people and places. If an ongoing conversation with one companion is what you want, a companion app is built for that and Slopverse is not. If you enjoyed the role-play, the adventures and the worlds, and wished you could see and hear them, that is what Slopverse is for.

Who it is for

Slopverse is for adults only. Sign-up has you confirm you are 18 or older and accept the Terms (no date of birth is asked or kept). Stories can be dark, violent or romantic at about the level of an R-rated film; the pictures never show nudity. It plays in a web browser and is built for a computer first; phones work too, and there is nothing to install.

It is new and small: one developer, Jonathan Larson, working with a crew of AI coding agents, and rough edges are still being found and fixed. You can watch it play first on the 24/7 stream at slopverse.ai/live, or look through the premises.

What it costs

10 free scenes, about 10 minutes of film. No card. Plans from $10 a month: Starter $10 (100 turns), Plus $20 (225 turns), Director $50 (600 turns). Top-up: 50 turns for $6, never expire. A turn is one move you send. The current plans are on the pricing page.

Questions

Is Slopverse connected to Character.AI?

No. Slopverse is an independent game made by Jonathan Larson. Character.AI's name is used here only to describe it.

Can I bring my characters over from Character.AI?

There is no import. You can describe a world in a line, including the people in it, and the game sets it up as a story with you in the lead.

Is there a companion or one-on-one chat mode?

No. Every game is a story with you as the lead, and the other characters live in that story. A chat layout is available for reading, but it shows the same scenes.

Is Slopverse free?

10 free scenes, about 10 minutes of film. No card. After that there are monthly plans; see pricing.
